Sun, Feb 1, 9:40 am: "Among the Tulips": Angel and Janelle Lopez share their experiences as a young multi-ethnic couple in Holland and take part in facilitated discussion about how to create a welcoming environment. Open to the public. At Hope Church RCA, 77 West 11th St, Holland.
Thurs, Feb 5, 11 am: Concert by traditional and contemporary Vietnamese instrumentalist Van-Anh Vanessa Vo, using the dantranh zither. Free, open to the public. Vo has produced award-winning soundtracks for several documentaries. She teaches dantranh and other Vietnamese traditional instruments in California. Free event "to connect participants with resources to help them achieve financial stability through savings, education, and home ownership opportunities." Now to Feb. 18: Exhibit from United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: "Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945." Now to June 15: "A Hundred Flowers: Phillip A. Harrington Photography from the People's Republic, 1956-1957." One of the first American journalists to enter Red China, Phillip A. Harrington (1920-2009), traveled through Moscow into China photographing everyday life in Beijing, Shanghai, and surrounding areas, capturing a never-before published; Harrington won awards for his coverage of China. www.hollandmuseum.org At Holland Museum 31 West 10th St, Holland.
Jan 30 – Aug 16: Splendors of Shiga: Treasures from Japan. Exhibit is partnership with Shiga, Grand Rapids' sister state in Japan; includes pottery, scrolls, screens, kimono and functional objects, works on paper and in wood; exhibit will change every two months. Includes video and other materials on Shiga. Adults $12; students with ID, $9; children 5-13, $6; children 3-4, $4. Scholarships
Woman's Literary Club: The club seeks scholarship applications from women and men currently full- or part-time at an accredited college, professional, or technical program, with graduation before or during December 2016. Must have satisfactory scholastic standing and be a permanent resident of the Holland area. Looking Ahead
Registration is open for the March 27, 2015, Summit on Race and Inclusion "Moving Beyond Bias." The event will be held from 8:30 am to 3 pm at Grand Haven High School, Grand Haven. Registration fee of $50 includes keynote speeches, a breakout session and panel discussion, refreshments and lunch. Workshops for Job Seekers
Ottawa County Michigan Works! offers free workshops to help residents with job searches and career development activities. Workshops are conducted weekly and are open to all, regardless of employment status, with no eligibility requirements for enrollment. Topics include job searching, resumes, interview tips and practice, career exploration, basic computer skills, and managing the financial impact of unemployment.
