COMMUNITY PROGRAMS FOR DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR DAY
Mon, Jan 19, 2015, various times during the day: Student events to celebrate the life and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King. For the first time, Holland Public Schools will close to mark the day, and students are invited to events hosted by Holland Human Relations Commission and Holland Youth Area Council. Mon, Jan 19, noon and 6 pm (NOTE: This is a time change from earlier announcements): Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event: Guest speaker Bernard Kleina, civil rights activist and urban photographer "will take you on a historic photo journey documenting his experience." His photographs are at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and will be at Holland City Hall during the day Jan. 19. Mon, Jan 19, 5:30 pm-6:45 pm: "The Church's Response to Injustice," dialogue on "how God is calling Christ's church to respond to modern-day injustice," led by Pastor Kenita Harris and Ben Aguilera. Following this, participants are encouraged to attend the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Civil Rights Lecture at Hope College's Dimnent Memorial Chapel (see below, at 7 pm). Wed, Jan 21, 7 pm: 2014 Social Justice Awards will be presented by the Holland Human Relations Commission to organizations and individuals for accomplishments in education, housing, employment, government/community, and youth. Wed, Jan 21, 7 pm: Photographer Bernard Kleina, civil rights activist and urban photographer,
will discuss his color photographs from the 1960s "The Healing Power of Hope: The Chicago Freedom Movement," which show Dr. Martin Luther King Jr protesting unfair housing policies in that city. Tues, Jan 27, 7 pm: Free public information meeting (in English and in Spanish) on the new Executive Actions on Immigration. Attorney Sarah Yore-VanOosterhout from Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) will cover who qualifies, documentation needed, and potential obstacles. In the spring Intersection Ministries and JFON plan to provide a form-preparation workshop to assist a limited number of people to prepare applications. Volunteer Opportunity
Help Measure a Point in Time: The Lakeshore Housing Alliance will conduct its annual count of persons experiencing homelessness in Ottawa County on January 28 and 29. Collecting reliable data on the number and characteristics of individuals, families, and unaccompanied children experiencing homelessness is "a critical component of local homeless planning and program development." Volunteers are needed for daytime and nighttime counts. Locations will include Community Kitchen in Holland and other sites to be determined.
