Tues, Jan 13, 12:30 pm:  Calvin College January Series: "Kinderlager: Reflections of a Child Holocaust Survivor," by Tova Friedman, one of 5,000 Jewish children living in the Polish town of Tomashov before World War II; at the end of the war, only Tova and four other children were still alive.  At Christ Memorial Church (live-streamed from Calvin College), 595 Graafschap Rd, Holland.
 
Wed, Jan 14, 6 pm: Film, "The Hundred-Foot Journey."  The Kadam family leaves India for Europe and opens a restaurant in a French village, in direct competition with Madame Mallory's acclaimed eatery, resulting in an escalating rivalry. A bridging of the sides and the "personal and professional connections encourage an understanding that will change both sides forever."  $2 for non-members of Evergreen; free for members.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.

Fri, Jan 16, 7 pm (support group); 8 pm (program):  PFLAG meeting, with film "Laughing Matters,"  interviews with four lesbian comediennes and excerpts from their live stand-up performances; "none set out to become an activist...but they have made a significant contribution because of their determination to be themselves."  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 2015, various times during the day:  Student events to celebrate the life and dreams of  Dr. Martin Luther King.  For the first time, Holland Public Schools will close to mark the day, and students are invited to events hosted by Holland Human Relations Commission and Holland Youth Area Council.  Pre-register at hrc@cityofholland.com or call (616) 355-1321; leave name, number of attendees, and a phone number where you can be reached.
---Elementary students: "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House," based on curriculum developed by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center.

Mon, Jan 19.  ACEH and the Boys & Girls Club will host an event during the day (times to be announced), including a video "Our Friend Martin," about Martin Luther King Jr., followed by a panel and Q&A.  At Boys & Girls Club, VanRaalte Ave at 18th St, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, noon and 6 pm (NOTE:  This is a time change from earlier announcements):  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event:  Guest speaker Bernard Kleina, civil rights activist and urban photographer "will take you on a historic photo journey documenting his experience."  His photographs are at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and will be at Holland City Hall during the day Jan. 19.  To make a reservation for the evening event, contact Holland Human Relations Department at hrc@cityofholland.com or call 355-1328.  Sponsored by Human Relations Commission and Haworth.  At City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 7 pm:  Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture: "The Face of America is Changing: Are We Ready?" will focus on issues of diversity, social justice, and inclusion; presented by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of The White Privilege Conference and director of diversity at Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn, NY.  Public is invited; admission is free.  Sponsored by Herman Miller Inc and Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and multicultural student groups.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave, Holland.
 
Wed, Jan 21, 7 pm:  2014 Social Justice Awards for accomplishments in education, housing, employment, government/community and youth. Presented to organizations and individuals by Holland Human Relations Commission.  At Holland City Hall, 270 South River, Holland.
 
Wed, Jan 21: Opening of exhibit from United States Holocaust Memorial Museum: "Nazi Persecution of Homosexuals 1933-1945."  Lithographs, other art depicting Nazi state's arrest and incarceration in prisons and concentration camps tens of thousands of German men "believed to be threats to the national health."  Exhibit continues to Feb 21.  (616) 331-3500 or anderlin@gvsu.edu  Sponsored by consortium of GVSU disciplines.  At Mary Idema Pew Library, Grand Valley State University, One Campus Drive, Allendale.
 
Thurs, Jan 22, 7 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series:  Orlando Ricardo Menes, award-winning poet, a native of Peru, who teaches creative writing at Notre Dame.  Free.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Tues, Jan 27, 7 pm: Free public information meeting (in English and in Spanish) on the new Executive Actions on Immigration.  Attorney Sarah Yore-VanOosterhout from Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON) will cover who qualifies, what documentation is needed, and potential obstacles.  In the spring Intersection Ministries and JFON plan to provide a form-preparation workshop to assist a limited number of people to prepare applications.  People at the Jan 27 meeting will be notified when the workshop is scheduled.  At Intersection Ministries, 945 136th Ave, Holland.
 
Scholarships
