Thurs, July 7, 7 pm:  Award-winning, 40-minute documentary, "Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot," the story of courageous students, teachers, and other activists and their nonviolent struggle to win voting rights for African Americans in the South.  Plus: Registration and voting information from Anna Perales, deputy city clerk of Holland, and Judy Karandjeff, president, League of Women Voters of Michigan.  Testimony by new U.S. citizen and first-time vote Denia Rodriguez del Toro, formerly of Cuba.   Free. Thurs, July 14, 5:30 pm to 8 pm:  Circles Informational Meeting Visitors Night.  Circles is an organization dedicated to ending poverty in Ottawa County, by being with individuals as they leave poverty and by pursuing community change, based on transformational friendships between individuals of different income levels.  Circles needs volunteers to become Allies to people in their path to financial stability.  To attend the meeting, or for more details, contact Brent Boersma at BBoersma@GoodSamMinistries.com.  At Nuestra Casa, 238 West 15th St, Holland.

 

Mon, July 25, 7 pm:  "Welcoming Refugees in West Michigan," with guest speaker Susan Kragt, executive director, West Michigan Refugee Education & Cultural Center; the Center works to support families and individuals "to gain skills for successful integration into the community; to foster a sense of community that benefits refugees and non-refugees alike." Community Opportunities

The City of Holland has openings for volunteers on two commissions.  If you are at least 18 years old and interested in serving, contact the Office of the Mayor at (616) 355-1324.  Info and applications are at http://www.cityofholland.com (Click on Government and scroll down to Volunteer Services). 

 

(1) Human Relations Commission (must live within Holland city limits):  Consult with/advise city council on equal rights/opportunities/accessibility; promote cultural and social understanding by discouraging/preventing discrimination through awareness and education; conduct studies, investigations; protect equal rights in housing, education, employment, public services.

 

(2) International Relations Commission (no residency requirement): Promote international and cross-cultural knowledge, awareness, understanding; plan/implement annual Multicultural Festival; facilitate the Sister City relationship.

 

Volunteer with Disability Network & Youth

The Disability Network/Lakeshore is starting a pilot program with its youth services, and partnering with TRIO/Upward Bound, to provide resources to their students with and without disabilities.  This summer's focus is on colleges, career exploration, identifying skills, and looking at future employment opportunities.  DN/Lakeshore needs volunteers at the following times and for these topics (you may volunteer for one or more sessions; all are held on the Hope College campus).  Contact Lucia Rios at (616) 396-5326, ext. 104; www.dnlakeshore.org
