 Mon, Nov 21; Tues, Nov 22, and Wed, Nov 23, 11 am to 4 pm: Don't miss this!  Big Read: Student Art Exhibit.  Showcases works of art and writing by hundreds of local students, in response to "Brother, I'm Dying." Whether you've read the book or not, you'll find this to be an amazing exhibit of student talent and thought.  At Holland Armory, 9th St between Central and College Aves, Holland.

 Tues, Nov 22, 4 pm: Community Conversation: "Law Enforcement and Diverse Communities" explores efforts by local law enforcement to engage diverse communities in this area and "provides insight into the training officers receive on community engagement."  Panelists include Holland Police Chief Messer, Ottawa County Sheriff Kempker, and Captain Payne of the Grand Rapids police department.  Hosted by Hope College Campus Safety, Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and GROW.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 Mon, Dec 5:  Deadline for submission of nominations for 2016 Social Justice Awards in the categories of Housing, Education, Employment, and Government/Community, as well as an award for a youth between age 13 and 19 from the Holland Human Relations Commission.  Go to www.cityofholland.com, Calendar page; then click on Government and then Human Relations Commission for information on criteria and applications.  (616) 355-1322.

 Opportunity for Youth

To engage youth in the observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, and to recognize the importance of young people in moving King's dream forward, the Holland Human Relations Commission has announced the following opportunityt:

  "I Have a Dream" Essay Competition: Students in grades 4 through senior high may submit essays that describe their dreams for equal access and opportunity in their schools or communities:  Papers should be 2 to 3 pages, double-spaced, and include the following: (1) What is your dream?  (2) Why is this important for our future? (3) What will you do at school to promote equality and access in our community?

  Each submission should include the student's full name and current grade, name of school, and a parent or guardian's telephone number.  Competitive categories: (1) 4th and 5th grades; (2) 6th, 7th, and 8th grades; (3) 9th through 12th grades.  Winners in each category will receive a $50 gift certificate and  have the opportunity to read their essays at the Social Justice Awards ceremony January 16, 2017.
