Opportunity for Youth
To engage youth in the observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, and to recognize the importance of young people in moving King's dream forward, the Holland Human Relations Commission has announced the following opportunity
"I Have a Dream" Essay Competition: Students in grades 4 through senior high may submit essays that describe their dreams for equal access and opportunity in their schools or communities: Papers should be 2 to 3 pages, double-spaced, and include the following: (1) What is your dream? (2) Why is this important for our future? (3) What will you do at school to promote equality and access in our community?
Each submission should include the student's full name and current grade, name of school, and a parent or guardian's telephone number. Competitive categories: (1) 4th and 5th grades; (2) 6th, 7th, and 8th grades; (3) 9th through 12th grades. Winners in each category will receive a $50 gift certificate and have an opportunity to read their essays at the Social Justice Awards ceremony January 16, 2017.
Submissions are due by midnight, Monday, Dec 12, 2016. Essays may be submitted online to hrc@cityofholland.com, mailed, or delivered to City of Holland, Human Relations Department, 2nd floor of City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland, MI 49423.
