One Week and one day Until the Party!!
The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) invites you and your family and friends to its annual Heart 2 Heart Community Celebration, a Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party, on Saturday, February 17, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.
Please plan to bring a dish to share from your cultural background, and a nonperishable item for a local food bank. There will be fun, fellowship, fabulous food, family activities, music, and performances to entertain all ages, plus a silent auction of goods and services to support ACEH's work in our community.

Mon, Feb 12, 2 pm to 7 pm: Pop-up Office Hours at Out On The Lakeshore Community Center, with staff from Equality Michigan Department of Victim Services offering support/advocacy for LGBTQ and HIV+ community. Mon, Feb 12, 6 pm to 7 pm: "Check Yo' Self: Becoming Culturally Competent." Interactive workshop by Holland Public Schools Equity Alliance, "to examine subconscious forms of bias and conditioning and become more fully aware of racial messages we've absorbed through our upbringing, the media, our education, etc." Aims to empower participants to explore possible solutions and areas for more study and investigation. Mon, Feb 12, 7 pm: "The Legacy of the Negro Leagues." Holland Sentinel sports editor Dan D'Addona will talk about the history of the League, its impact on baseball and U.S. culture, and the role our region played in it; he serves on the American Baseball Research's Negro Leagues Research Committee. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.
Tues, Feb 13, 3:30 pm to 5 pm: Presentation by Shaka Senghor, nationally known advocate for criminal justice reform. Free, open to public. Sponsored by LAUP and Herman Miller. At Herman Miller Greenhouse Facility, 10201 Adams St, Holland.
Tues, Feb 13, 6:30 pm: "Community Talks: The 95 Stories Project." An effort of Hope College students to address "underground racism and homophobia" on campus, this event will be an opportunity to learn about the Project and to raise questions and concerns. A partnership with Forward Action Michigan – Ottawa and Allegan Counties. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

Tues, Feb 20, 6 pm: 2018 Black History Lecture: "Black Students in Higher Education: Disparities, Challenges, and Triumphs." Dr. Tonisha Lane, University of South Florida, will include issues such as implicit bias, campus climate, racial microaggressions, stereotype threat, sense of belonging; she holds a Ph.D. from MSU and has many awards for her research on the experiences and outcomes of underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Tues, Feb 20, 7 pm: "Harriet Tubman & the Underground Railroad." Rosie Chapman performs as Tubman (who helped liberate hundreds of slaves before and during the Civil War) and involves the audience in her presentation. At Herrick District Library Children's Area, 300 South River, Holland.
Community Opportunity
The Promote the Vote Campaign is looking for people to host gatherings in their homes in Holland, Saugatuck/Douglas, West Olive, etc., on Wednesday, February 21, to kick off a campaign to put a voting rights amendment to the Michigan constitution on the November 2018 ballot. Backed by a coalition of the League of Women Voters, ACLU, NAACP, and others, the amendment would protect the right to a secret ballot, provide equal access to absentee ballots, allow citizens to register closer to Election Day (as most states do), give the option to vote straight party ticket, automatically register citizens to vote at the Secretary of State's office unless the citizen declines, create rules that remove barriers and make voting more secure. "Black Heroes/Black Friday"; shown throughout February: Portraits of black heroes by more than 20 artists. St. Louis, MO, artist Sarah Paulsen, who was involved in the Ferguson Movement following the officer-involved shooting death of Mike Brown, drew 50 portraits of black heroes in four days leading up to Black Friday, the largest shopping day in November and encouraged other artists to do the same.
