Mon, Feb 3, 1 pm to 2:30 pm AND Tues, Feb 4, 6:30 pm to 8 pm: Community Input Meetings: Opportunities & Challenges in Holland's Neighborhoods. Come to one of these meetings to share your ideas and input, which will "help inform the city's use of Community Development Block Grant funding that supports efforts to improve housing and create suitable living environments." Award-winning story of a Mexican family who operate an emergency ambulance in Mexico City, "striving to keep their financial needs from jeopardizing people in their care as they face increasing moral dilemmas." Tues, Feb 4, 5:30 pm: Black History Month Keynote Lecture: "Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights…Jazz as Activist Music" by Dr. Damani Phillips, a native of Pontiac, MI, who is a performer, composer, jazz saxophonist, associate professor and director of jazz studies at the University of Iowa. Event will include Hope's Concert Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Arts Collective, and Community Gospel Choir. Tues, Feb 4, 7:15 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers: Readings by authors Lesley Nneka Arimah (debut short-story collection "What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky" won Kirkus Prize and NY Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award; recent story "Skinner" received 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing) and Marcelo Hernandez Castillo (first undocumented student to graduate from the writers program at the Univ of Michigan; poetry collection won many awards; memoir "Children of the Land" will be published this winter). Fri, Feb 7, 7 pm: "The Intersection of Race and Gender," by Dr. Sonja Trent-Brown, Chief Officer for Culture and Inclusion and associate professor of psychology at Hope College. Hosted by Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); everyone is welcome. Tues, Feb 11, 6 pm: Abrahamic Dinner "Refugee Stories of Faith and Hope." Hosted by the Kaufman Interfaith Institute, with speakers "who for one reason or another had to leave their home and start a life in the U.S." sharing their experiences and what sustained them along the way. Focus exhibition of 20 works from the Museum's African American Art Collection, through Feb 6. "(re)collection" through Thurs, Feb 6. Chicago-based artist and professor Nate Young uses family oral history and artifacts to interpret the life of his great-grandfather, who was part of the African American experience during the Great Migration of the 20th century.
