TODAY through at least Jan 23:  Additional showings of the powerful film "Just Mercy," the story of attorney Bryan Stevenson and the Equal Justice Initiative and their work to free innocent men from death row, especially in the South.  At AMC Star 8 theater in Holland.  Check theater's website for times and tickets.

TONIGHT, Fri, Jan 17, 6 pm to 8 pm:  Opening reception to meet the artists.  Four women, from different parts of the world, will have their works on display through Feb 17 (See below under Exhibits).  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

TONIGHT, Fri, Jan 17, 7 pm, support; 8:10 pm program:  PFLAG meeting.  Video of interview with Ed Smart re his advocacy on behalf of missing and abused children and his own struggles with same-sex attraction (in 2012, his teenage daughter Elizabeth was abducted from the family home and held captive for many months).  Gender SAFE (Supporting All For Equity) meets 6 to 8 pm. Sat, Jan 18, 10 am to 1 pm: "Cultural Immersion: Across the Bridge."  Panelists discuss cultural and racial divide between Muskegon and Grand Haven and their motivation to try to help narrow that gap through planned experiences in 2020. Mon, Jan 20, 11 am to 12:30 pm:  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Day Luncheon, hosted by Community Action House in partnership with Maple Avenue Ministries.  Soul food luncheon served; program will commemorate life and work of Dr. King with the theme "I Have a Dream" and presentations by Community Action House staff and community leaders. Fri, Jan 24, 6 pm: "Collecting African American History, with an emphasis on Idlewild, MI."  Presentation by C. J. Kingdom-Grier, who grew up near Idlewild and who has an extensive collection of African American artifacts and materials.  (616) 649-3778. Thurs, Jan 30, 7 pm: "Why do we hate THEM?  Because we can't forgive the people we have wronged."  Dr. Charles Green of the Hope College Psychology Department "discusses the reasons why the objects and images n the exhibit 'THEM: Images of Separation' are hateful. By exploring the history of European colonialism, Dr. Green will unpack how people of color became objects of derision and fear."  Free, donations appreciated.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

Community Opportunities

Winter classes of Reciprocal Language Partnership (RLP) pairs native English speakers who want to learn Spanish with native Spanish speakers who want to learn English.  There is a cost for the class; prospective students must attend an informational meeting (Jan 21 or Jan 28); three levels of instruction offered, depending on number of students. Classes are Tuesdays, Feb 4 to May 5 at Eagle's Wings Church/Iglesia Alas de Aguila, 635 Riley, Holland.  Call Rachel Patmos at (616) 738-3850.

Restorative Circle Facilitator Training is being offered Thurs, Jan 23, 9 am to 4 pm and Fri, Jan 24, from 9 am to 4 pm.  Come learn and practice "a model of approaching conflict in relationships, families, churches, workplaces, and groups."  Suggested donation for training is $150.  Call (616) 392-7947 for information or to register. Volunteers needed for Refresh ministry of Community Action House/First United Methodist Church.  Come to learn more about this outreach that offers showers/haircuts/mailing address/more for persons who are homeless or in need.  Training for prospective volunteers will be Fri, Jan 24, from 9 am to 11 am at the church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.

Exhibits

"(re)collection" through Thurs, Feb 6.  Chicago-based artist and professor Nate Young uses family oral history and artifacts to interpret the life of his great-grandfather, who was part of the African American experience during the Great Migration of the 20th century.  At DePree Art Center and Gallery, Hope College, 275 Columbia Ave, Holland.
