Kingdom-Grier, who grew up near Idlewild and has an extensive collection of African American artifacts and materials.  Door prizes.  (616) 649-3778. Sat, Jan 25, 5 pm to 9 pm: Lunar New Year Festival. Inaugural free event, hosted by Grand Rapids Asian-Pacific Festival and Downtown Grand Rapids, celebrating Asian community's customs, traditions, and Year of the Rat.  Dragon dance performances, lion dances, firecrackers, kids' activities, traditional new year foods.  At Monroe North Lot, 555 Monroe Ave, NW, Grand Rapids.

Wed, Jan 29, 9:30 pm, until 1 am, Jan 30.  Lakeshore Housing Alliance's Point-in-Time Street Count of persons who are homeless.  Volunteers needed for this outreach, on the north side and south side of Holland.  Training provided. Thurs, Jan 30, 7 pm: "Why do we hate THEM?  Because we can't forgive the people we have wronged."  Dr. Charles Green of the Hope College Psychology Department "discusses the reasons why the objects and images n the exhibit 'THEM: Images of Separation' are hateful. By exploring the history of European colonialism, Dr. Green will unpack how people of color became objects of derision and fear."  Free, donations appreciated.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

Tues, Feb 4, 5:30 pm: Black History Month Keynote Lecture: "Jazz in the Fight for Civil Rights…Jazz as Activist Music" by Dr. Damani Phillips, a native of Pontiac, MI, who is a performer, composer, jazz saxophonist, associate professor and director of jazz studies at the University of Iowa. Event will include Hope's Concert Jazz Orchestra, Jazz Arts Collective, and Community Gospel Choir. Hosted by Black Student Union, Hope Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and Hope Department of Music.  At Jack H. Miller Concert Hall, 221 Columbia Ave, Holland.

Tues, Feb 4, 7:15 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers:  Readings by authors Lesley Nneka Arimah (debut short-story collection "What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky" won Kirkus Prize and NY Public Library Young Lions Fiction Award; recent story "Skinner" received 2019 Caine Prize for African Writing) and Marcelo Hernandez Castillo (first undocumented student to graduate from the writers program at the Univ of Michigan; poetry collection won many awards; memoir "Children of the Land" will be published this winter). At Jack Miller Recital Hall, 221 Columbia Ave, Holland.

Thurs, Feb 6, 6:30 pm: "Equity and Disparities in Health Care." Health professionals discuss challenges, solutions to achieving health equity.  Part of museum's exhibit Us vs THEM, artifacts from Crow Museum. Free, donations appreciated. At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

Fri, Feb 7, 7 pm: "The Intersection of Race and Gender," by Dr. Sonja Trent-Brown, Chief Officer for Culture and Inclusion and associate professor of psychology at Hope College. Hosted by Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); everyone is welcome. The program is part of the museum's exhibit Us vs THEM, artifacts and materials from the Jim Crow Museum. Community Opportunities

Winter classes of Reciprocal Language Partnership (RLP): Pairs native English speakers who want to learn Spanish with native Spanish speakers who want to learn English.  There is a cost for the class; prospective students must attend an informational meeting Jan 28; three levels of instruction offered, depending on number of students. Exhibits

Focus exhibition of 20 works from the Museum's African American Art Collection, through Feb 6.  Artists include "luminaries of the Harlem Renaissance generation (Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, Lois Mailou Jones) as well as important younger artists (Willie Cole, Kara Walker, Rashid Johnson)."  At Kruizenga Art Museum, 271 Columbia Ave, Holland.

"(re)collection" through Thurs, Feb 6.  Chicago-based artist and professor Nate Young uses family oral history and artifacts to interpret the life of his great-grandfather, who was part of the African American experience during the Great Migration of the 20th century.  At DePree Art Center and Gallery, Hope College, 275 Columbia Ave, Holland.
