TODAY, Mon, Nov 1, 4 pm: "Rwanda: Past, Present, Future," by Manasse Mugemana. Sponsored by French Cultural Studies Colloquium and Department of Political Science at Hope College.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, 263 College Ave, Holland.

 

TONIGHT, Mon, Nov 1, 7 pm: 'What Are You? Voices of Mixed-Race Young People," a readers' theatre, following by a panel discussion of multiracial Hope College students.  Presented by the Phelps Scholars at Hope.  Free.  At Wichers Auditorium, Music Building (in center of campus, west of Dewitt Center), between Columbia and College, Holland.

 

Tues, Nov 2, Election Day, polls are open 7 am until 8 pm:  VOTE!  Your vote is your voice/su voto es su voz! Congressional, legislative, judicial, and various board candidates are on the ballot, plus proposals.

Wed, Nov 3, 7 pm: "Rembrandt's Thinking: His Ideas about Light and Shadow," by Ernst van de Wetering, an authority on the 17th-century Dutch painter.  Sponsored by Netherland-American Foundation, West Michigan chapter; Holland Museum; Dutch Heritage Coordinating Council, and others.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, 263 College Ave, Holland.

 

Wed, Nov 3, 7 pm: "Women in Afghanistan: Equality at Home and in Politics," by Dr. Annie Dandavati, Hope College professor of political science and director of women's studies.  Sponsored by Lakeshore Women for Peace, with Hope United for Justice-Justice League, and others.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Nov 4, 7 pm: Native American Heritage Celebration: "Forgotten Warriors: 'Company K' in the Civil War," with historian Chris Czopek; honors Native American sharpshooters from Michigan who fought in the Civil War.  Dr. David Schock will show part of his film, "Road to Andersonville," featuring interviews with Native American veterans; introduction by Roger Williams, elder of the Pokagon Potawatomi tribe.  Sponsored by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education.  At Martha Miller Center, Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, Columbia Ave and 10th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 5, 7:30 pm: Holland Is Ready Film Series: "Big Eden," comedy about an artist who returns from New York to his Montana hometown, and various relationships.  Holland Is Ready is a community group working for the safety, rights, and inclusion of GLBT persons in the Lakeshore area.  At Park Theatre, River Ave between 10th and 11th Sts, Holland.

Fri, Nov 12, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); the public is invited.  "Writing History from the Bottom Up," by historian Dr. William Cohen of Hope College, focusing on the "issues and opportunities that arise as we try to write history that is both inclusive and historically accurate."  He has written on Thomas Jefferson and on African American migration from the Civil War to World War I. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY

Lakeshore Latino Outreach Center will hold its 2nd annual holiday arts and crafts bazaar on Saturday, Nov 13, from 9 am until 5 pm., featuring handmade jewelry, local artwork, knitted and crocheted items, baked goods, gifts in a jar, and homemade piñatas.  Proceeds  support the agency's community programs, particularly assisting Latinos.  At St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church multipurpose room, 195 West 13th St, Holland.

 

 

JOB OPENING
