Tues, Nov 16, 9 am to 2:30 pm: "Men, Masculinity and Media," by Dr. Jackson Katz ("Tough Guise" and "The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help").  Interactive training "to inspire men and women to work together to prevent abusive attitudes and behaviors."  $30 fee ($45 with CEU), includes lunch.  Register today at www.gvsu.edu/women_cen  At Grand Valley State University, Kirkhof Center, 1 Campus Dr, Allendale.

 

Tues, Nov 16, 3:30 pm: Lecture on Arabic poetry: "Tamim b. al-Mu'izz and the Formation of Fatimid Poetics: Praising al-Aziz, Contesting Ibn al-Mu'tazz," by Dr. Majd Al-Mallah, director of the Middle East Studies program at Grand Valley State University.  Free, open to the public. Presented in conjunction with Hope's participation in global International Education Week, and features the theme: "The Arab World—Language, Literature and Culture."  At Graves Hall, Winants Auditorium, 263 College Ave, Holland.

 

Tues, Nov 16, 7 pm: Community Conversation with Jackson Katz (see entry above).  Parents and community members can learn and ask questions about abusive attitudes and behaviors.  Free.  At Community Reformed Church, 10376 Felch, Zeeland.

 

Thurs, Nov 18, 11:30 am-1 pm: Soup for All: fundraiser   for  Ottawa Area Housing Coalition, which assists people who are homeless or facing homelessness. Soup from local vendors, including Russ', 8th Street Grill, Boatwerks, and At the Diner.  $10 at the door, or from Human Relations Office, 2nd floor of City Hall; email e.nyholt@cityofholland.com  At Civic Center, Pine Ave at 8th and 9th, Holland.

 

 

Fri, Nov 19, noon to 1:30 pm: "Protecting all Students from Harassment: What Students and Parents Can Do!"  Overview of harassment and bullying, its effect on victims, and what parents and schools can do; legal responsibilities of schools and legal rights of parents and students.  Free to community members; $15 for social workers needing CEUs.  Call (616) 331-2748 or email womenctr@gvsu.edu to reserve a space.  Bring own lunch.  Sponsored by Lakeshore Alliance Against Domestic and Sexual Violence and Grand Valley State University Women's Center.  At GVSU Meijer Campus, 515 S. Sat, Nov 20, 7 pm: "Images: A Reflection of Cultures."  Showcase of performances by Hope College international students.  Free. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 

Mon, Nov 22, 7 pm: Film, "With God on Our Side," sponsored by Friends of Palestinians and Israelis—Holland Group; voices the theology of Christian Zionism and a biblical alternative that would promote peace and reconciliation for both Jews and Palestinians.  Second half of film will be shown on Thurs, Dec 9.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.
