Is "In the Community" useful in helping you learn about or publicize diversity and multicultural events around here?  We hope so…and we're asking you to consider joining ACEH or renewing your membership as our current fiscal year gets under way.  Memberships support this email and all the other ACEH activities. The dues are $20 a year ($35/two years) for an individual; $30 a year ($50/two years) for a family; $40 for nonprofits; $75 for businesses.

ACEH was founded in Holland in 1999 and is committed to justice, equal opportunity, cross-cultural understanding, and appreciation for diversity.  Members and friends work together through programs, outreach, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. Tues, Oct 23, 4 pm: "Reconciling Differences Through Intergroup Dialogue."  Presented by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education with several faculty and administrators; provides an opportunity for interactions with people from different social identity groups and a safe environment in which topics of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and class will be discussed; includes activities, individual and small group reflections, and dialogues.  Open to the community.  At Maas Conference Room, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 23, 6 to 9 pm: Opening session of West Coast Connect (formerly Holland First), "learning about the community through the eyes of diversity and promoting cultural awareness and community leadership."  Sessions are free and run on Tuesdays through Dec. 18.  Registration required.  

 

Thurs, Oct 25, 7 pm: "Understanding the Role of Women in Islamic Societies."  Presentation by Ambassador Tahir-Kheli.  Sponsored by World Affairs Council of Western Michigan.  At Aquinas College, Upper Donnelly Hall, 1607 Robinson Rd SE, Grand Rapids.

 

Sat, Oct 27, 5 pm-9:30 pm: Viva la Vida! celebration of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), tradition of Mexico and Mexican culture honoring the memories of loved ones who have died.  Music, dance, crafts, food, Frieda Kahlo costume contest, face painting, lantern making, costume procession (7 pm), more.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. 8th St, Holland.

 

Mon, Oct 29, 6 pm: Dia de los Muertos activity for children in 3rd-5th grades: Play Lotería, Mexican picture bingo game; snacks; prizes.  355-3100. At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 30, 6 pm: Dia de los Muertos activity for children in 3rd-5th grades: Decorate a sugar skull, learn about Day of the Dead.  Call 355-3726 to register.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 2, social hour 6:30 pm, dinner 7:30 pm: Annual Community Dinner of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  $50.  RSVP by Oct 26 to Juan Alfaro (616) 594-7109 or www.laup.org   At Midtown Center Auditorium, 96 West 15th St, Holland.

UPCOMING ACEH EVENTS

 

Sat, Nov 10, 2 pm (NOTE new time/place this month):  For its November meeting, ACEH is collaborating with the Holland Museum to present "Speak Now," a documentary film by Adelante youth of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) who interviewed local residents about their experiences in West Michigan.  Open to the public, everyone is welcome.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

 

Sat, Dec 8, 5 pm: Annual ACEH Holiday Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party.  Bring a dish to share from your heritage; ACEH provides beverages and table service.  Music, art activities, entertainment, auction of goods and services—lots of fun for the whole family.  Everyone is welcome.  At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St (use 9th Street entrance), Holland.

Four-week class presented by Community Action House, Wednesdays, 6 – 8 pm:

EXHIBITS:

Through Nov. 3: Obiter Dicta: Contemporary Latino Artists: works by 5 artists from the lakeshore on display at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Through Dec 31: Tenemos una voz ("We have a voice").  Adelante youth art and writings, supported by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th, Holland (closed Tuesdays).
