Is "In the Community" useful in helping you learn about or publicize diversity and multicultural events around here?  We hope so…and we're asking you to consider joining ACEH or renewing your membership as our current fiscal year gets under way.  Memberships support this email and all the other ACEH activities. The dues are $20 a year ($35/two years) for an individual; $30 a year ($50/two years) for a family; $40 for nonprofits; $75 for businesses.

Thurs, Oct 18, 10 am: "Acts of Courage: A Celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month," featuring Paul Chávez, son of the late civil rights leader César Chávez. By Davenport University and the César Chávez Unity Committee.  At Davenport University Sneden Auditorium, 6191 Kraft Ave SE, Caledonia.

 

Thurs, Oct 18, 7 pm: League of Women Voters-Holland education forum on pros and cons of six proposals on the Nov. 6 ballot.  Cosponsored by American Association of University Women and Latin Americans United for Progress.  www.lwvholland.org  At Holland City Hall council chamber room, 270 S. Fri, Oct 19, 7 pm: PFLAG meeting to see DVD of play, "You Belong to Us."  Based on the stories of parents of gay and lesbian residents of Manhattan, Kansas.  Business meeting precedes film; bring snack to share.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Sat, Oct 20, 9 am to noon: 6th annual free Health Fair offering services and consultations with medical personnel; information booths.  Organized by the Asian Center in partnership with Philippine Cultural Group of Michigan, Spectrum Health, and volunteers. the.ac@asian-center.org  At Centerpointe Mall (use entrance by post office), 3665 28th St SE, Grand Rapids.

Mon, Oct 24, 7 pm: Presentation by Kevin Boyle, author of "Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights, and Murder in the Jazz Age," the recounting of a landmark historical event in Detroit in 1925 that helped lay the foundation of the civil rights movement.  A Great American Read event sponsored by Michigan Humanities Council.  www.grpl.org  At Grand Rapids Public Library, 111 Library St NE, Grand Rapids.

Sat, Oct 27, 5 pm-9:30 pm: Viva la Vida! celebration of El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), tradition of Mexico and Mexican culture honoring the memories of loved ones who have died.  Music, dance, crafts, food, Frieda Kahlo costume contest, face painting, lantern making, costume procession (7 pm), more.  Sponsored by Holland Area Arts Council and Latin Americans United for Progress.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 E. 8th St, Holland.
