Tues, Dec 30, 5:15 pm:  Justice for Jonathan Candlelight Vigil at the intersection of Riley St and US 31, near where West Ottawa student Jonathan Bracamontes was killed in a traffic accident in September; the driver, who left the scene, was charged with a misdemeanor and pleaded guilty; sentencing has not yet taken place.  Bring a candle/glow stick/cell phone; park in the mini-strip mall parking lot.  Vigil takes place only at this site, on sidewalk in front of McDonalds.  

 

Wed, Jan 14, 6 pm: Film, "The Hundred-Foot Journey."  The Kadam family leaves India for Europe and opens a restaurant in a small French village, in direct competition with Madame Mallory's acclaimed eatery, resulting in an escalating rivalry. Mon, Jan 19, 7 pm:  Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture: "The Face of America is Changing: Are We Ready?" will focus on issues of diversity, social justice, and inclusion; presented by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of The White Privilege Conference and director of diversity at Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn, NY.  Public is invited; admission is free.  Sponsored by Herman Miller Inc and Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and multicultural student groups.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave, Holland.

            Kwanzaa, a week-long (Dec. 26-Jan 1) celebration of family, community, and culture, is held in the United States and in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. Using seven core principles, Kwanzaa honors African heritage in African-American culture. It was created by Maulana Karenga, and first celebrated in 1966–67.
