Tues, Dec 30, 5:15 pm:  Justice for Jonathan Candlelight Vigil at the intersection of Riley St and US 31, near where West Ottawa student Jonathan Bracamontes was killed in a traffic accident in September; the driver, who left the scene, was charged with a misdemeanor and pleaded guilty; sentencing has not yet taken place.  Bring a candle/glow stick/cell phone; park in the mini-strip mall parking lot.  Vigil takes place only at this site, on sidewalk in front of McDonalds.  
 
Wed, Jan 14, 6 pm: Film, "The Hundred-Foot Journey."  The Kadam family leaves India for Europe and opens a restaurant in a small French village, in direct competition with Madame Mallory's acclaimed eatery, resulting in an escalating rivalry. In response there is a bridging of the sides and the "personal and professional connections encourage an understanding that will change both sides forever."  $2 for non-members of Evergreen; free for members.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.
 
Thurs, Jan 15, 2015, 11:30 am-1:30 pm:  "I Don't See Color"...and Other Racial Myths in the U.S., presented by Alan Headbloom of Headbloom Cross-Cultural Communications, who takes an historical and linguistic approach to telling why this claim just isn't true.  $30 includes lunch.  Register at www.Eventbrite.com  or at prfc-gr.org or send check to PRFC, 250 Commerce Ave SW, Grand Rapids 49503.  (616) 466-6187. Thurs, Jan 15, 2015, 4:30 pm-6:30 pm: Soul Food Fest.  $6 for community persons.  At Hope College Phelps and Cook Dining Halls, 10th St between College and Columbia, Holland.
 
Thurs, Jan 15, 7 pm:  Film, "Selma," about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr "and the civil rights movement that changed America."  A portion of the ticket price will benefit Partners for a Racism-Free Community (Grand Rapids); a half-hour discussion will follow the film.  Buy tickets at Celebration Cinema North or online at www.celebrationcinema.com when they become available.  At Celebration Cinema North, 2121 Celebration Dr NE, Grand Rapids.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 2015, various times during the day:  Student events to celebrate the life and dreams of  Dr. Martin Luther King.  For the first time, Holland Public Schools will close to mark the day, and students are invited to events hosted by Holland Human Relations Commission and Holland Youth Area Council.  Pre-register at hrc@cityofholland.com or call (616) 355-1321; leave name, number of attendees, and a phone number where you can be reached.
---Elementary students: "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House," based on curriculum developed by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center. 
---Middle school students: Bullying prevention.  More details in coming weeks. 
 
Thurs, Jan 19.  ACEH will host an event at during the day (times to be announced), including a video about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., followed by a panel and Q&A.  At Boys & Girls Club, VanRaalte Ave at 18th St, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 7 pm:  Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture: "The Face of America is Changing: Are We Ready?" will focus on issues of diversity, social justice, and inclusion; presented by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of The White Privilege Conference and director of diversity at Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn, NY.  Public is invited; admission is free.  Sponsored by Herman Miller Inc and Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and multicultural student groups.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 7 pm:  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event:  Guest speaker Bernard Kleina, civil rights activist and urban photographer "will share his story as an activist and take you on a historic photo journey documenting his experience."  His photographs are at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and will be displayed at Holland City Hall throughout the day on Jan. 19.  To make a reservation for the evening event, contact Human Relations Department of the City of Holland at hrc@cityofholland.com or call 355-1328.  Sponsored by Human Relations Commission and Haworth.  At City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.
