Sun, Dec 28, 4 pm:  Community celebration of Kwanzaa: "Ujima: The Collective Work IS Our Responsibility" is the theme of this year's celebration. The community is invited. The celebration will include African drumming and dance, children's story telling, exhibits, and more.  For information, please contact Rev.             Kwanzaa, a week-long (Dec. 26-Jan 1) celebration of family, community, and culture, is held in the United States and in the Western African Diaspora in other nations of the Americas. Using seven core principles, Kwanzaa honors African heritage in African-American culture. It was created by Maulana Karenga, and first celebrated in 1966–67.

Thurs, Jan 15, 2015, 4:30 pm-6:30 pm: Soul Food Fest.  $6 for community persons.  At Hope College Phelps and Cook Dining Hall, 10th St between College and Columbia, Holland.
 
Mon, Jan 19, 2015, various times during the day:  Student events to celebrate the life and dreams of  Dr. Martin Luther King.  For the first time, Holland Public Schools will close to mark the day, and students are invited to events hosted by Holland Human Relations Commission and Holland Youth Area Council.  Elementary students: "The Fair Housing Five & the Haunted House," based on curriculum developed by the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Center.  Middle school students: Bullying prevention.  More details in coming weeks.  Pre-register at hrc@cityofholland.com or call (616) 355-1321; leave name, number of attendees, and a phone number where you can be reached.

Mon, Jan 19, 7 pm:  Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture: "The Face of America is Changing: Are We Ready?" will focus on issues of diversity, social justice, and inclusion; presented by Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr., founder of The White Privilege Conference and director of diversity at Brooklyn Friends School, Brooklyn, NY.  Public is invited; admission is free.  Sponsored by Herman Miller Inc and Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and multicultural student groups.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave, Holland.
