Members and friends work together through programs, outreach, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. Thurs, Oct 9, 6 pm: G.R.O.W. Movement annual kickoff and celebratory event. The initiative is a Hope College campus-wide movement "to create a shared community vision to establish a common, positive, dynamic, inclusive and asset based approach to diversity and inclusion." Spearheaded by Office of Multicultural Education, with partnerships throughout the campus. At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Fri, Oct 10, 7 pm: "Implicit Bias and Colorblindness," by Rev. Denise Kingdom Grier--"colorblindness is an affliction, not a virtue; it's not the inability to see color, it's the tendency to see only certain ones. Implicit bias renders others in our community as invisible or worth-less." General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH). Everyone is welcome. 392-5086. Sat, Oct 25, 5 pm socializing; 5:30 pm dinner; 7 pm cultural programs: 2014 Diwali Celebrations. Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, "is a Hindu festival celebrated in autumn each year; it spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, and hope over despair." Community Opportunities: Middle Schools
Calling All Colors Middle School Liaisons for Holland Public Schools for 2014-15 academic year. Help recruit students for the program, accompany students to CAC conferences, hold meetings every other week at Holland East or Holland West schools. Training, materials, support, and stipend. Center for Women in Transition: Two on-call shelter assistants. Ensure safety and security of facility, meet basic needs of residents; provide backup to crisis line volunteers. Hourly wage. Available for all shifts, including 3rd; weekends and holidays. Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON): Legal assistant (flexible 20 hrs/wk; $11-15/hr based on experience). Work for site attorney; general office operations and client management support. Based in Grand Rapids; will assist also at satellite clinics. Commitment to public service; fluent in Spanish; BIA accreditation or prior immigration law experience is a plus. JFON is a faith-based service involving diverse individuals, cultures, faiths who come together through the United Methodist Church to welcome newcomers.
