Tues, April 14, 2 pm:  "Building Strong Communities through Faith"; speaker is Patrick A. Thurs, April 16, doors open 6 pm: Annual Reach for the Stars fundraising event for Center for Women in Transition.  Keynote speaker: Diane Rosenfeld, director of the Gender Violence Program at Harvard Law School, on sexual assault on campuses, including response and prevention.  Live and silent auctions, cocktail reception, dinner.   Tickets $125/person ($700 table of 8).  Register at www.cwitmi.org or call (616) 494-1744.  At Pinnacle Center, Hudsonville.

Fri, April 17, 7 pm support group; 8 pm program: PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore meeting: "How Churches Can Make Room for All," showing excerpts from a DVD "Body and Soul: We Belong," produced by Room for All, a group within the Reformed Church in America, with discussion led by Judy Parr on the importance of inclusion.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
 
NOTE New Date and Time:
Mon, April 20, 6 pm to 8 pm (students speak at 6 pm):  Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) general meeting, with program presented by Hope College students who are in an Introduction to Ethnic Studies class and Holland police officers. Students will speak about their experience with a police training exercise. Officers from the patrol unit, K-9, SWAT, and other units will meet one-on-one or in small groups to show types of equipment used in various situations and discuss what determines a level of response to incidents they encounter.  Open to the public.  For info, contact John Yelding at yelding@hope.edu  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
 
Tues, April 21, 7 pm: League of Women Voters-Holland. Public forum on the May 5 ballot proposal.  Nonpartisan, factual, power point presentation "What is it?  What would it do?" by Judy Karandjeff of the League of Women Voters of Michigan.  At Holland City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland.
 
Wed, April 22, 6 pm: Holland Citizens Taskforce meeting.  Open to the public, to help brainstorm ideas on purpose, objectives, logo.  (Speaker previously announced for this meeting, John Golaszewski of the Michigan Civil Rights Department, will present on Wed, May 6, instead).   At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th, Holland.
 
Fri, April 24, 1:30 pm: Program "Bringing the Fire to Student Success!" by author and education expert Baruti Kafele, who relates identity, equity, discipline, focus, and resiliency to student success in the classroom. Event intended for students grades 6-12, parents, mentors, and youth-based community mentors.  At Holland High School Performing Arts Center, 600 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.
 
Exhibits
DisArt Festival 2015, now through April 25.  A multi-venue event with world-renowned exhibits of Disability Arts from around the world, DisArt Festival "challenges its audiences to reconsider the importance of community, identity, and difference."  All events are accessible; most are free.  For information on locations, times, etc. go to www.disartfestival.org/about or the festival hub at 50 Louis St, NW, in downtown Grand Rapids.
 
Community Opportunities
4-H Tech Wizards program needs 4 men and 2 women to mentor youth in grades 6-8, two hours a week for a year, including summer, Tuesdays 4 to 6 pm or 6 to 8 pm.  Program focuses on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills; most students also take part in the Hope College Step Up program.  Mentors do not have to be "rocket scientists," but willing to learn new things while building positive relationships with youth.
