Wed, July 22, plus July 28 and Aug 8), 8 pm:  Hope Summer Repertory Theatre play "To Kill a Mockingbird," that explores racial injustice that threatens to divide a community.  "Through courage and compassion, lawyer Atticus Finch seeks truth and justice, while his feisty daughter, Scout, learns what it means to be an instrument of hope."  Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Harper Lee, the book was Holland's Big Read in 2014.  Ticket prices vary. Fri, July 31, 7 am to Sun, Aug 2, midnight: VISION Artist Marathon Pro-Peace.  Over two days, local Caribbean artist Picardo will paint a multi-media art mural, a "pro-peace event centering on options for nonviolent conflict resolution and peace and justice."  The event invites participation as well as conversations on these topics.  picardocolors@gmail.com or (616) 710-7651.  At Park Church parking lot, 10 East Park Place NE, Grand Rapids.
 
Tues, Aug 4, 5 pm to 7 pm:  24th annual National Night Out "Going Away Party for Crime and Drugs."  Community-wide block party highlighting police/community relations and neighborhood spirit.  Free, including free hot dogs and ice cream.  Activities, information tables, child ID, horse rides, pie-eating contest, music by "Sweet Justice," comprised of local law enforcement personnel.
 
Wed, Aug 5, 8:30 am-4 pm: Young Professionals of Color Conference: "Good Is Not Enough: Excellence Should Be Your Standard."  Hosted by Cascade Engineering, with BL2END as the Young Professionals sponsor and Herman Miller Inc as platinum sponsor.  Keynote speaker Keith Wyche and breakout sessions Blazing the Trail; The Art of Negotiation- Leveraging Yourself, Your Skills & Your Knowledge; Career Paving: Creating and Understanding Your Career Strategy.  $75; some scholarships available. Sunday, Aug 9, 1 pm to 4 pm: 17th annual Potluck in the Park of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).  Everyone is welcome.  Please bring a dish to share from your cultural background; ACEH provides beverages and table service.  Music, games and activities for kids and adults, fantastic food, and lots of fun.  At Dunton Park, 290 Howard Ave (west of River Ave/UNITY Bridge), Holland.
 
Mon, Aug 10, 6 pm to 8 pm: Destination Education "Off to College Party" for students going to college or returning to college.  Students' entire families invited also, for games and food.  First 120 college students will receive a College Survival Kit and a chances to win larger prizes.  RSVPs requested but not required, at http://ow.ly/LE1hF  Those who register will be entered in a special drawing for an iPad mini.  At Kollen Park picnic pavilion, 240 Kollen Park Blvd, Holland.
 
Community Opportunities
Disability Network/Lakeshore:  DN/L is accepting nominations for its 5th annual 2015 Ability Award.  Nominees may be any resident of Allegan or Ottawa County "who lives with a disability, has a family member with a disability, or is a friend or ally to the disability community." The award honors those who promote a spirit of inclusion and a community without barriers, through leadership, advocacy, and empowerment of people with disabilities. Kalamazoo Air Zoo:  "Black Wings," showcasing history of African American pilots and others in the aviation industry through more than 70 photographs, film clips, artifacts, aircraft models.  Traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian Institution and the National Air and Space Museum.  Open daily, varying hours. Opening Thurs, July 23:  Holland Museum:  "Documented: The Stories of Latinos in Holland" explores Holland's migrant community and its impact on Holland throughout history.  Also on display is a collection from Michigan State University: "Immigration and Caricature," the role of caricature and stereotype in forming American values and attitudes about the multicultural development of the U.S., with images from the Civil War to World War I, a period of massive migration to this country.
