Mon, April 18 - Sat, April 23: Helping the Homeless: Adding $1 to your bill this week at these three Holland restaurants—The Biscuit, deBoer Bakkerij, New Holland Brewing Company—will aid the Lakeshore Housing Alliance work toward long-term solutions to prevent and end homelessness in Ottawa County.

 

Mon, April 18, 4:30 – 6:30 pm:  CultureWorks reception for The ST(O)RY exhibit "portraying the triumph of a community in Zambia through large-scale photographs from Poetice International"; panelists (at 5:30 pm) from Poetice offer "an inspiring perspective of using one's creative craft for good."  CultureWorks provides after-school and summer opportunities in various forms of art for diverse students from Holland-area middle and high schools.  (616) 990-1178.  At CultureWorks, 710 Chicago Dr, Suite 200 (next to Engedi Church), Holland.

 

Mon, April 18, 7 pm: Japanese Language and Culture Group. Mayumi Balfour of Sister Cities International leads a monthly discussion focusing on different aspects of Japanese language and culture.  (616) 942-2561.  At Schuler Books & Music, 2660 28th St, Se, Grand Rapids.

 

Thurs, April 21, 2 pm: Film, "The Head of Joaquin Murrieta."  (See description at 6:30 pm, April 21, below).  Event includes LLEAD Roundtable.  For the 2 pm screening, please confirm your attendance by emailing hlr4latinosbylatinos@gmail.com.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, April 21, 6:30 pm (social); 7 pm (film):  Film, "The Head of Joaquin Murrietta."  PBS film about Mexican American lynchings throughout the U.S. southwest.  Film screening with director Juan Valadez.  Free.  Hosted by LLEAD Holland (Latino Leaders for the Enhancement of Advocacy & Development, a statewide organization).  At Holland High School, 324 West 24th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, April 21, 6 pm: Holland Human Relations Commission monthly meeting; held at neighborhood center as part of the Commission's strategic vision for community outreach.   Light refreshments will be served.  At Nuestra Casa, 253 West 15th St, Holland.

 

Community Opportunities

Calling All Colors:  Volunteers needed to facilitate small groups of middle or high school students at the spring Calling All Colors conferences.  Training is Thurs, April 21, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at LEDA office, 665 136th Ave, Holland.  Conferences are Mon, May 2 (middle school students) and Tues, May 3 (high school), from 8:45 am to 10:45 am at Grand Valley State UniversityContact Alfredo Hernandez, program director, at program@ethnicdiversity.org or (616) 846-9074.

 

4-H Cultural Competency series:   Would you like to share something from your family's heritage with elementary students? 4-H and Herrick District Library need adults and older teens to help children learn about aspects of different cultures (food, music, art, holidays, dances, or traditional dress/clothing)--whichever one or ones that you'd like to talk about or demonstrate with the children.  Meets Thursday afternoons in June or July.  Contact Susan at (616) 994-4543 or fentons@msu.edu

Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years; $40 per year for a nonprofit; and $75 per year for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.
