 Mon, Oct 31, 4 pm: Hispanic Heritage Lecture on Art.  "Exploring and explaining modern Mexican art," by Dr. Susana Pliego Quijano.  The David and Jane Armstrong Lecture Series.  At Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, Martha Miller Center, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 Mon, Oct 31, 4 pm (Hope College campus) and 7:30 pm (Fellowship Church):  Kairos West Michigan. An Israeli and a Palestinian couple who have lost children to "enemy" fire in Israel and Palestine will share their stories in a program "Through Shared Lament to Reconciliation." 4 pm: Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland; 7:30 pm: Fellowship Church, NW corner of Lakewood Blvd and 168th Ave, Holland.

 Tues, Nov 1, 7 pm: Big Read Kick-off.  Ted-talk-styled presentation by Hope professors Dr. Jonathan Hagood, Dr. Pauline Remy, and Dr. Natalie Dykstra, putting this year's book "Brother, I'm Dying" into written, historical and cultural context.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 Wed, Nov 2, 1 pm: "Welcoming Refugees to West Michigan."  Panelists include refugees, refugee resettlement agency staff, and community volunteers.  Sponsored by Holland Human Relations Commission; conducted by West Michigan Refugee Education and Cultural Center.  A Big Read event. At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Fri, Nov 4, 6:30 pm-11 pm:  Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) Inaugural Gala. Black-tie dinner, celebration, dancing, drinks, awards.  Fri, Nov 4, 7:30 pm: Geraud Dimanche Concert. Haitian music and dancing, and master Haitian drummer Geraud Dimanche. Free, open to the public.  A Big Read event.  At Jack H. Miller Center for the Musical Arts, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 Sat, Nov 5, 11 am: Children's author event:  Award-winning author Anne Sibley O'Brien will share her acclaimed book "I'm New Here," a children's story about three students working to assimilate into their new culture.  All ages welcome; book signing follows.  A Big Read event.  At Herrick District Library children's area, 300 South River, Holland.

 Sat, Nov 5, 2 to 4 pm: Story. Art. Community: Hand-on art workshop.  cultureWorks and the Big Read Student Advisory Team host an afternoon of art, featuring unique immigration stories from West Michigan young adults, followed by a creative response led by a local artist.  At cultureWorks, 710 Chicago Dr, Suite 200, Holland.

 Mon, Nov 7, 7 pm: Film, "La Belle Vie/The Good Life": Haitian American filmmaker Rachelle Salnave's journey to discover her Haitian roots examines "the complexities of the overall political and economic dichotomy in Haiti."  Salnave (director/producer) and Jean H. Marcelin (director of photography) answer questions and discuss the film.  A Big Read event. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 Fri, Nov 11, 10:30 am – 4 pm: Ottawa County Diversity Forum.  Presentations/discussions on what government, business, community organizations are doing to build on the strength of diversity; how to "engage people, advance ideas, and be a catalyst for change around the topics of diversity, inclusion, and equality." Hosted by Ottawa County Cultural Intelligence Committee with county government, LEDA, and Government Alliance for Racial Equity.  $10 includes lunch.  Register at www.miOttawa.org  At West Olive Fillmore Complex, main conference room.
