members and friends to a celebration of fun, fellowship, family activities, piñata, and potluck; proclamation by Holland's mayor; ACEH t-shirts available for a donation.

Fri, Aug 7, 4 pm to 10 pm; Sat, Aug 8, noon to evening; Sun, Aug 9, 9:30 am to 6:30 pm: Summer in the City Community Festival sponsored by St. Francis de Sales Church.  Tickets $5 per person or $20 per family, in advance, or $6 and $25 at the gate (costs are per day); tickets available at church office, Maple Ave and 13th St, Holland.  Festival includes music, dance party, car show, games, Holland's Got Talent competition, foods of St. Francis (Mexican, American, Vietnamese, Filipino, and Thai), Taste of the City, Sunday brunch by The Biscuit, 50-50 raffle drawing.  For schedule, check the website: www.festival.stfrancisholland.org/schedule.  At St. Francis de Sales Church, Maple Ave and 13th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Aug 7, through Sun, Aug 9: "Islam in America" conference.  A three-day "primer on Islam, geared for non-Muslims"; includes speakers, two of whom converted from  Christianity; all are Americans who studied at the Islamic University of Medina and serve as imams.  Free.  Website: www.IslaminAmerica.wordpress.com  At Holiday Inn and Suites, 5401 28th St, SE, Grand Rapids.

 

Sat, Aug 8, 9 am to 9 pm, and Sun, Aug 9, 9 am to 3:30 pm: First annual Civil War Muster, reenactment of The Battle of Utoy Creek.  Reenactors, vendors, medical scenarios, dinner, night fire, and Dutch church service at 11:30 am on Sunday.  Tickets: general admission Sat or Sun, $6; two-day ticket, $10; group rates available.  Organized by Holland Museum, with many local sponsors.  Schedule and ticket information at www.hollandmuseum.org  At Van Raalte Farms, 24th St and Country Club Road, Holland.

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY: The Lakeshore Latino Outreach Center will hold a garage sale Fri, Aug 14, and Sat, Aug 15, and needs donated goods for the sale.  Please bring items to the LLOC office at 345 East 16th St, Suite 241 (corner of 16th and Fairbanks) Holland, Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4:30 pm.  After-hours donations can be arranged by contacting Todd Rathjen at (616) 886-7268.  Proceeds from sale will help the Center provide assistance to the community, especially Latinos.  Donations are tax-deductible.
